“And catch the heart off guard and blow it open.”

These moments - rare and wonderful - were described by Annie Dillard in "Pilgrim at Tinker Creek" as having been 'rung like a bell'.

Perhaps she was describing more of a Zen moment of that sudden sense of oneness with creation - a door thrown open where you didn't know one existed - rather than a soul-blowing joy.

It occurs to me that solitude is a prerequisite for these experiences . . .

or hanging from scaffolding up among the treetops and birds and chimney tops . . . .:o)
