I am not a Christian but I do like this advent idea of opening a window on a thought and gift each day leading to the special day in Christians calendar. I think it is something that could be adopted by all people at whatever time of the year they find is special, celebratory and illuminating. Of course it wouldn't be acalled advent then:0) The pleasure of creating an advent calender is as much part of the celebration and commemoration as the opening of the doors be the calender something you hang up on a wall or a set of envelops set neatly in a pile on table.
For those of you reading this who are Christians and for those of you who find the Christmas story one which gives you gifts I offer you an advent calender for your computer... well I don't actually the BBC does. I have just listend to todays offering, which is John Betjamin's poem Advent 1955 which has some very telling lines in it for both Christian and non Christian, it is read by John Savident.
The BBC Advent Calendar
"Reveal a different audio gem each day during Advent. There's poetry and readings performed by celebrities including Terry Wogan, Derek Jacobi and personal reflections from Lionel Ritchie and Fay Weldon." It will open each day but you can go back and listen to the previous days.
