I didn't recognise you
Stranger ‘Hello’
Me ‘Hello’ – whilst wondering do I know you
Stranger ‘Haven’t seen you for a while, have you not been well?’
Me ‘Oh just the usual life stuff’ – they don’t know me then or else they’d not ask the health question.
Stranger ‘I’ve started going mid day on Wednesdays have you tried during the day?’
Me ‘No’ - what the hell are they on about ‘Are there many there’ – shit, I hope that’s open enough
Stranger ‘Just me and name until about 12.30 when that hairy bloke walks to the other end and just comes back and then out’
Me ‘Ah well that gives you two plenty of space to chat’ laughing and hoping this woman is like the rest of the valley women and knows that no activity is worth a fig unless accompanied by conversation.
Stranger ‘Oh yes we still put the world right then get in the shower and carry on’
We are both laughing now, she because I’ve recognised her…if only she knew and me with relief and recognition of sorts. Putting the pieces together I realise that this ‘stranger’ is someone who doesn’t know me as I don’t know them, that she recognised me with my clothes on but I didn’t she. We ‘know’ each other from early morning sessions at a swimming pool.
